Concerto for New Orleans is a thirty-five minute original work featuring Made in the Shade with classical orchestra. The piece is a collaboration between Made in the Shade and Boston based composer Stephen Halloran. The concerto is a tribute to the music of New Orleans and contains five classic jazz tunes: West End Blues, The Chant, St. James Infirmary, Sleepy Time Down South, and Tiger Rag. The tunes are a launching pad for improvisation and written music which emphasize contrapuntal and contemporary techniques as well as traditional aspects. Full of surprises, the work is a fusion of jazz and classical elements maintaining an organic unity.
The world premiere of Concerto for New Orleans is scheduled for February 11, 2005 with the Boston Classical Orchestra, a critically acclaimed group under the direction of Steven Lipsitt, featuring musicians from the Boston Pops and Boston Ballet. The performance will take place at Boston’s historic Faneuil Hall. For tickets and more information visit
